ABSTRACT
An investigation was carried out to determine the antimicrobial activity of nutmeg (Myristicafragrans) was tested by using various solvents against E. coli, Pseudomonas sp., Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella sp. Antibacterial activity of Myristica fragrans extracts (500 μg/ ml) was determined by disc diffusion method. Determination of antimicrobial activity revealed that crude aqueous extracts of leaf of nutmeg and methanolic extracts of seeds of nutmeg showed antibacterial activity against E. coli, Pseudomonas sp. and Staphylococcus aureus. In case of crude aqueous extracts of leaf of nutmeg, largest zone diameter shown against Pseudomonas sp. was 25 mm, against E. coli was 24 mm and against Staphylococcus was 20 mm.In case of crude methanolic extracts of seeds of nutmeg, largest zone diameter shown against E. coli was 26 mm, against Staphylococcus aureus was 25 mm and against Pseudomonas sp.was 14 mm. The Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extracts was tested by broth dilution method. The disc containing 5 % DMSO alone used as blind control. The minimum inhibitory concentration of crude methanol of root against Klebsiella sp. was 350 μg/ ml, against E. coli was 350 μg/ ml and against Staphylococcus aureus was 450 μg/ ml. The minimum inhibitory concentration of crude methanol extract of leaf against Klebsiella sp. was 350 μg/ml and against E. coli was 400 μg/ ml.
